Pura Luhur Uluwatu

The Amazing Cliff-Top Temple in Bali

One of Bali’s most important sea temples, Pura Luhur Uluwatu perches on the tip of 70 meter cliff that directly drops into the hazardous surf. It’s located on the southwestern peninsula overlooking Indian Ocean that promotes a splendid sunset experience.

Uluwatu is one of six key temples that become Bali’s spiritual pillars. Aiming at protecting the island from evil sea spirit, there is a Brahma statue facing the ocean on the backyard of the main shrine. This building enjoys extreme location on the jutting part of the cliff but only Hindus are allowed to enter the ground. Though so, tourists can still tour the other shrines on the main yard.

There are two gateways to enter the site that both are uniquely arched and flanked by statues of Ganesha. The inside part is equally artistic with the brick walls decorated by complex carving of Bali’s mythological creatures.

Snaking stairway leading to the main spot is walled by concrete. It takes almost one hour to trek the path but the stunning view of crashing surf and the expanse blue ocean will be perfect companion. Monkeys are abundant there and are let live freely as they are believed to be the guard of the temple.

Throng of tourists will crowd this site especially in the afternoon to catch the famous sunset. But it’s not all yet. While enjoying the moment, we’ll also be treated to Bali’s legendary Kecak and Fire dance that add dramatic vibe to the experience. The place is closed as soon as the show ends.

Where is It?

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is located in Pecatu Village, Kuta South district. It’s 25 km away from Kuta downtown and is better accessed by private or travel car. Taking public transportation is possible as long as you arranged the ride in advance with taxi as the most convenient one.

Uluwatu is open daily from 9 AM – 6 PM but it is available all day and night for worship purpose. There are sarong and sash for rent at the entrance if you are not traditionally dressed. You’ll usually find local guides offering service around the gateway but it’s basically not necessary to hire one though it can be helpful.
